Fibre FAQs

What is fibre broadband?

Whilst standard broadband relies on the old network of copper phone cables to deliver an internet connection, fibre broadband uses fibre-optic cables - long, thin strands of glass about the width of a human hair - that transmit flashes of light, interpreted as data. In rural areas NBI run cables along the telephone poles.  When you order your fibre broadband from any of the broadband companies, NBI run the cable into your house either overhead or underground in ducting if available. This is FTTH or fibre to the home.

What is FTTC?

Fibre to the cabinet is found in towns. This means the fibre is coming as far as a cabinet on the street. The copper phone lines then take the signal into the houses. These speeds are generally 40-100 Mbps. Open Eir and SIRO are upgrading towns currently.

How will I know fibre is available?

You will be notified. You can check here

Do I get it from NBI?

No, there are about 40 companies that you can get fibre from. All supply the same service, just slight difference in price and customer service.

Will the price increase?

The large mobile companies are increasing prices by 3% + inflation each April. Most small independent companies are not doing this.

Do I have to get it?

No, you may continue with your existing provider if you wish.

Is it expensive?

It is slightly dearer than most other options.

Is it the best available speed?

Yes, it is the fastest type of broadband available.

Is it reliable?

It should be, however the biggest issue will be cable damage from high machinery and storm damage. Hopefully trees will be kept trimmed as fixing fibre is more complex than joining copper wires.
